March is a month full of promise

March is a month full of promise

March is a month always full of promise – the days are longer, plants are thinking about growing, and animals can sense there could be an end to the cold and wet. We are glad the snow has now lifted in Wensleydale and we are experiencing a break in the weather.

With Easter around the corner we are full steam ahead planning Easter trails, animal afternoons and new recipes for the holidays. Staff member Amanda is back in harness in the Farm Shop, it’s great to see her back at Berry’s. Visitors to the shop will have noticed our Easter display table, we have chocolate Easter eggs on sale.

Our Steak Night was a big success. Vinni (the Michael Buble tribute act) put on a fantastic performance and was a huge hit with diners on the night. The whole event was such a success that we are now planning another one for the 13th of May so make sure you are following us on Social Media to find out when tickets go on sale.

Elsewhere on the farm, the Animal Team have been really busy. Doris our pygmy goat has now found a husband; a handsome Billy named Luxor. The two will soon be departing on their ‘honeymoon’ and we hope to hear the pitter patter of tiny hooves in August.

We are experiencing somewhat of a ‘baby boom’ here at Berry’s, with the birth of our first lambs and a calf from one of the highland cattle. We will soon be offering visitors to the farm a chance to interact with the animals even further, with feeding sessions including the opportunity to feed the lambs – stay tuned for more details of these activities on our Facebook page and Twitter.

Mango, our Mangalitza Sow is back home after going away to see Braveheart (a Duroc Boar from Askrigg). We are delighted to announce that she has a litter of piglets due in April or May. To celebrate, we thought we’d run a competition asking participants to guess how many piglets Mango will have. If you’re feeling lucky, be sure to let us know your guess on our Facebook page (hint: Mango has had 3 litters to date, the largest of which was 8 piglets…). Mango is looking really well and the Berry’s Team are happy to have her back on the farm.

With the highs and lows of farming life, we are hoping for lots of healthy young to continue the cycle of animal production.
